Just 5 Steps Will Guide You to Your Intentions & Desires

Identify What You Want, Why, then Release It

The Law of Intention and Desire is one of Deepak Chopra’s Seven Spiritual Laws that resonated with me, more than I had realized, until I read and researched it, in preparation for this post.

For those of you who have read the book, you may realize that I have not been following the order in which the seven laws are presented. This is intentional.

Though I agree with the order of the laws as presented, especially with the first one being The Law of Pure Potentiality¸ I post in accordance with where my reflections, prayer, and meditations lead me, on that day. This may cause a bit of confusion, when one law builds on another, on which I have not covered. I intentionally try to buffer this from happening, by breaking the laws down into, hopefully, easy to understand elements. When appropriate, I also relate to applying or not applying the law to my real-life experiences.

Most people who have read the Seven Spiritual Laws likely read it the first time in order, and many subsequent times, out of order based on what moved them. I read this book for the first time over 20 years ago and have read it, and passed it out, around the world, many times.

Though I will cover all of the laws, in my chosen order, here is the order in which they are presented in Deepak’s book:

  1. Pure Potentiality
  2. Giving
  3. Karma or Cause and Effect
  4. Least Effort
  5. Intention & Desire
  6. Detachment
  7. Dharma or Purpose in Life

This post focuses on the Law of Intention and Desire.

“All that counts in life is intention.” – Andrea Bocelli

After reading the chapter again, and watching speeches on it, I better understand how this law works mechanically.

My interpretation of the law, will tend to be more spirit-oriented, and less scientific, so I hope that it makes fully understanding of this law easier. This law is very powerful and should not be trivialized.
“Pursuing any dream, and achieving it will be significantly more difficult, without applying the Law of Intention & Desire to your daily living.”

The Law of Intention and Desire at a Glance

Here’s how I interpret this law. Please read this to compliment the videos and other media that I present below.

We are whatever our deepest desire is. Whatever we concentrate on and give our energy to most passionately, is a manifestation of who we are, and what our life becomes. Therefore it is important to clearly identify what you want. Reflect on, write down, and proclaim, that which you want within relationships, achievement, creative expression, spirituality, and purpose.
But it is important to first understand the difference between Intentions and Desires, before this suggestion can be put into practice, with any confidence.

Desire is simple. It is what we want, such as a car, a new job, a new house, etc. It is our goal that can clearly be checked off when accomplished. Intention is deeper than a goal. It requires mindful reflection to identify, as well. Desire only requires identifying what you want.
Intention deals with how you want to feel when your desires are achieved.

It requires examining that feeling, to ensure that it is in alignment with universal love, which is God. The two work together and will not work if separated. You will not achieve a desire that is ‘good’, without ensuring that your Intentions for that desire are established.

“No one should fear to undertake any task in the name of our Saviour, if it is just and if the intention is purely for His holy service.” – Christopher Columbus

Keep in mind that ‘bad’ Intentions and Desires manifest too. This is why it is not only important to identify your Intentions and Desires, but you should be very mindful as to whether they are loving ones, that will lead you to your greater good.

“In one of the videos below, the Unity Church minister describes good health Intentions as being like a dinner bell, that tells all of the cells of our bodies at the same time, what their focus should be.”

I actually set mindful Intentions and desire in a prayer that I wrote, and say often, asking God to bless me exceedingly.

“Dear heavenly father

If it is your will

Bless me abundantly

And, exceedingly

Dear God

Bless me

(State how you want to be blessed; Example: Financially, Romance, Spiritual Friends & Acquaintances, Sustainability, Miraculous Healing, and specific desires, such as, a New Job, Publishing a book, completing a project, etc.)

But the most important blessing that I desire

Is to know my purpose and how to please you

Dear God

Please reveal your will for me

Knowing it would be my biggest blessing”

In this prayer, I tell God my Desires. But, I also tell him about my intention to please him. The same pleas occur in, Kevy’s Prayer for Jabez (1 Chronicles 4:9-10). In both prayers, I set Intentions and Desires into motion by stating exactly what I want, in terms, of relationships, creative expression, achievement, and God.
With the start of each day, I affirm my Intentions for the day, which correlate back to my overall vision.

It is critical to affirm and proclaim mindful Intentions and Desires because doing so, puts the energy of our entire being on alert to what the goals and plans are. In doing so, we are also alerted when we get off track, in our minds. …It’s called a conscience.  That consciousness, our ego, keeps things moving along.  It ‘keeps it movin’.

Refer to the post, Unemployment’s Low! – Even My Ego Has A Job Now, for more direction on how to make your ego work towards your greater good.

The law states further, that once Intentions and Desires are identified, that we should go into a tranquil place, via meditation and prayer, and place them there, leaving them.

Once left, we should become detached from the outcome of those Intentions and Desires.

The final step is easy, once the others have been successfully performed. You must then allow God to handle the details, placing full faith in him, but we must be attentive in the present for the possibility that your Intentions and Desires to be returned to you blessed and multiplied.

“Everyone has been made for some particular work, and the desire for that work has been put in every heart.” – Rumi

Intention and Desire in Practice

Here is a summary of steps to put the Law of Intention and Desire into everyday practice.

  1. Meditate and pray on your Intentions and Desires
  2. In a spiritually-aware state, release them, and don’t look back.
  3. Remain connected with your higher self every day, paying attention to every event and action, relative to the day’s intentions and goals.
  4. Become detached from the expected outcome. Just do your thing, and focus only on getting it done, not the results of your actions.
  5. Sit patiently, and watch God do the rest.

With closed eyes

I set into motion

My intentions

…And my desires

And the outfit

That I was wearing

When achieving this goal

I could clearly visualize

Now I’m observing everything carefully

As each moment passes

And a new one

Because I just established

My intentions with God

And I know they’ll come back, elusively

Blowing in the wind

The Law of Intention and Desire – The Chopra Center

“Inherent in every intention and desire is the mechanics for its fulfillment . . . intention and desire in the field of pure potentiality have infinite organizing power. And when we introduce an intention in the fertile ground of pure potentiality, we put this infinite organizing power to work for us.”

I will put the Law of Intention and Desire into effect by making a commitment to take the following steps:

  1. I will make a list of all my desires. I will carry this list with me wherever I go. I will look at this list before I go into my silence and meditation. I will look at it before I go to sleep at night. I will look at it when I wake up in the morning. Read Additional Steps
