Hippity-Hop Inspirational Music – Don’t Knock It – It’s Going Nowhere

Initially, I was not a big fan of hip hop influenced inspirational music. I am from the old school. I feel that gospel should have dramatic organ solos, anointed screaming, artists profusely dripping sweat, and joyful noise driving the Holy Ghost dance.
That has changed. It seems this new genre, within a genre, is exploding in popularity. Kirk Franklin deserves most credit for this upsurge. I was not his biggest fan at first either. I always believed that he had tremendous talent, and discovered and produced bright new gospel talent. Again, it was simply because the hip hop, R & B, trap gospel sound was too extreme to me. I felt badly about ‘shaking a tail feature’ to God.

Now, I listen to Kirk Franklin’s Praise channel on Sirius XM daily. It’s one of the sources I go to develop my blog’s gospel playlist. It’s unbelievable how many new artists are debuting in this genre, as well as, established pop artists, including: Snoop Dog, Charlie Wilson, Chance the Rapper, and even Nicki Minaj.

Now I surrender to this new style and many of the directions where the younger generation is leading us. I applaud them for gravitating towards a spiritual direction at the prime of their lives, attracting others who would have otherwise not been attracted to spirit. I don’t think I was doing this, when I was in my twenties.

I suggest that you surrender to the gifts that the universe delivers, in general. So don’t hate on this new form of expression. You will get nowhere. The force of change that is heading our way is one that the world will have to recon with. This force is a lot more dynamic and impactful than ‘old school’ attempts to propagate good.

It may be a bit in your face, and can be rough around the edges, but rightfully so. It needs to provoke attention from the multitude of distractions in today’s world, that keep many from realizing that humanity may be hemorrhaging.

This was the perspective on a company I created years ago, Love Electra, aiming to ‘electrify love’ for today’s world. In a sense, I hold this same perspective with the Kevy Michaels blog.

Like with ‘Emoji-speak’, where I am get complete messages in Emoji symbols, or, where I get a crying smiley face, when I feel I should get a personal visit, or at least an actual conversation, I hated this style of music!

But, I can’t change it. You probably can’t either. With Emojis, I asked, ‘are going back to caveman hieroglyphics’; we have no reason to. Times’ a changing, though. There are early talks about Emoji language making our world a better place. If fact, they’re considering adding Emoji language courses to the high school and college curriculum. I guess it will replace cursive writing, which is being eliminated.

Oh well, it’s the young folks’ turn to rule. Who am I to judge?

I won’t judge this Hippity-Hop Inspirational approach. I’ll embrace it.

Here’s a 2017 New Yorker article on how Kirk Franklin has pushed the boundaries of Gospel music, followed by video and audio examples that I hope at least one you will enjoy.

How Kirk Franklin Is Pushing the Boundaries of GospelBy Vinson CunninghamJanuary 16, 2017 Issue

Blending secular sounds with an uplifting devotional message, the artist aims to “make God famous” through his music.

Here are examples of non-traditional gospel and inspirational music, both relatively old and new. I included inspirational urban-influenced examples from Muslim and Christian artists.

It is my hope that something resonates with you on the eve of Sunday.

    1. That is a great idea to write on how musicians respond to cultural changes. It could be expanded to include society’s response to changes in the American culture which is occurring all around us. Thanks. You are very appreciated! – Kevy
