Unemployment’s Low! – Even My Ego Has A Job Now!

“The ego is not master in its own house.” Sigmund Freud

“The greatest conflicts are not between two people but between one person and himself.”Garth Brooks

“The Ego is an exquisite instrument. Enjoy it, use it-just don’t get lost in it.”Ram Dass

I promise to explain, through this story, how I put my ego to work.

Several years ago, I was highly successful in my career. I accomplished many things quite easily, to the dismay of ‘friends’. I remember a very motivating ritual that I started with friends in Atlanta. Every New Year’s Eve we would sit in a circle, cocktails in hand, and go around reflecting on the passing year, and setting expectations for the coming year.

I would always find gratitude and appreciation for the past, and set very high expectations for the new year. Some may have thought that my expectations were too high. I did not, though. I was just putting into the universe that which I desired. …You name it, MBA Studies, World Travel, Home Ownership, Running Goals, and Financial Freedom. Because of my Christian upbringing, instilled in me by my mother, sprinkled with my New Age philosophy, and stern belief in miracles, I saw no reason to limit my goals, no matter how far-fetched they seemed to others.

Repeatedly, I accomplished every goal that I set, and then some. I looked forward to each year’s New Years ritual, because I (and my ego) wanted to celebrate the pride of my New Year’s accomplishments, and to ‘put new goals out there’ (for my ego), among my close friends. I’m not sure that they appreciated me as much. I’m sure some saw me a cocky. Some thought I felt I was better than the rest, or just a bit ‘hard to take’.

Regardless of their feelings about me, I went on to graduate studies at Georgia State University, traveled to many countries around the world (often with my mother) while working for CNN, living in London, custom-built an Auburn Avenue near-mansion that was 8 homes from Martin Luther King’s birth home, became a top seeded runner in the Peachtree Road Race (and others), and held a very impressive financial portfolio.

Needless to say, the New Years ritual ended. I don’t know why; it just did. It seemed due to these obvious accomplishments that sentiments about me turned to subtle resentments, some that still linger today. My being “hard to take” is still a gross misinterpretation of who I am.

What I did in the ritual, as I do today, was to simply give my ego its job assignments!

I put that sucker to work! My ego had the perfect qualifications for spearheading the fulfillment of my dreams. I realize that this sounds weird, but it works for me.

I read in a post on the Pure Awareness blog, as well as, in many other articles and posts, the many wonderful characteristics of the ego, if it’s put to a good cause (that’s key). I had the audacity to put those characteristic in a positive light, to work for my good.

Let’s look at the ego’s persona first. According to Pure Awareness’ post, the ego has the characteristics listed below.

  • The ego maintains the world as an illusion
  • The ego defends
  • The ego is never satisfied
  • The ego is the exaggerated expression of our values and feelings
  • The ego needs thought to exist
  • The ego will do everything in its power to remain alive and well
  • The ego is time-limited and must defend and protect it identity at all times and at all costs

This sounds like the perfect traits for an impressive job candidate…’a driven individual, who strives, not only to meet objectives, but to surpass them’. If given the right objectives, this type of candidate could lead any organization to incredible success.

So, I hired my ego to work for me. My ego is now Chief Operations Officer (COO). Don’t get me wrong, he’s not in control. I’m the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). I call all the shots, just as I did in the New Year’s ritual.

Basically, my higher self (I) ‘put my ego on blast’, preferably in front of as many people as I can. My higher self makes bold statements about what I will accomplish, many times having no clue how I will ever do so.

Since my ego thrives on illusion, defense, satisfaction, exaggeration, thought, it’s importance, and it’s sustainability, I send a clear signal to him, ‘that he’s not just going to sit around here doing nothing, and has lots of work to do.

All my higher self has to do, like many great CEO’s do, is make bold claims, and the ‘worker bee’ will make it happen. I’m sure my ego gets upset when I do this, but I know that once I put him on blast, he will do his level-best to not be shamed for not accomplishing what my Higher Self commands. Of course he always delivers. It’s because he thinks he’s the shit.

So ego, hear me out: My blog will blow up, my books will get published, I will travel doing public speaking, and will produce several video shorts. Now, get to work! I need this done in less than 3 years.

I love the analogy of the ego being a dragon, as in fairy tales, whereby the dragon (the ego) is conquered, and the knight (the higher self) tames and rides it.

  1. OK Kevy, we have sure got some in common although am Much younger lol (a 1979 would that by baby boomer?).
Last month, my ego and body took a big bashful beating from my spirit after an earth, wind and fire exchange which lasted 70 days.
Now, I am inspired by your post to put that fella to some real productive work.
Thanks really for sharing and all the best

    1. Thanks Dray for reposting.

This is the way the powerful tool of blogging should work, exchanging ideas, wisdom, and Hope.

Since we would never win battling this digital revolution, we should find ways, as we have, to make it meaningful.

I blog to preach truth….my sincere truth, which doesn’t always agree with conventional wisdom, and occasionally, pokes holes in it.

But I have experience and proof to back it up. I can’t contain this.

I also aim to share and receive organic life revelations from those who have the same fire of spirit in their hearts, and are not bashful about expressing it.

We ‘the people’ have each other’s answers and questions. It’s sort of like when I research prescriptions or medical treatments. Though I look up side effects, and medical research, I find reading testimonials of others most useful.

Some people learn things in life, and can’t contain wanting to share it with others. That’s God’s spirit doing this to us. That’s you. That’s me.

I thank God for you, validating my most hopeful expectations and desires of humanity….but only a segment of humanity. I would be skeptical if everyone agreed.

I vision that through our sincere exchanges, we could form a pretty powerful force. We don’t need all those institutional layers separating us, ‘the people’.

Please select a hand-picked post for me to repost, with honor for you

      Make it a great day!
